BIRDS & BATTERIES - Selections from…Nature vs. Nature - Touring from February 8th

No man is an island. This includes Mike Sempert, the brains behind Birds & Batteries. Although Selections from…Nature vs. Nature is more of a singular, isolated effort, Sempert proves the live show is definitely not a companionless event.

Birds & Batteries formed the summer of 2005, in Wellfleet, MA, as a solo project from the multi-talented Sempert. He recorded, produced, mixed and arranged the album, in addition to playing all instruments except for the percussion, bass and horns. With the help of friends, he recorded 18 tracks, which later became Nature vs. Nature.

Shortly after the tracks were created, Sempert moved to San Francisco with 200 copies of the disc in hand. With hopes of finding more members to join Birds & Batteries, he took a job at the legendary venue Hotel Utah Saloon where he met a drummer named Brian Michelson. The two worked together to adapt the material from the demos to a live show, relying heavily on a laptop to provide the synth programming and drum machines.

Recently Sempert returned to Nature vs. Nature to make a few adjustments to the original mixes. The end result was Selections from…Nature vs. Nature.

The record is a collection of several years of songwriting, which kicks off with the dance-friendly track “Code Orange.” The vocals soar over the carefully arranged layers of synths and drum machines.

Like many artists, Birds & Batteries doesn’t necessarily fit into one genre of music. Mike explains: “If calling Birds & Batteries ‘electro-country-indie-pop’ helps people relate to our sound before they actually hear us or at least makes them curious about it, it could bring more people to our music.” “Unfortunately,” he adds, “I don’t think they have that section at most record stores yet.”
