RETISONIC
- Levittown EP
Retisonic is Jason Farrell [Bluetip,
Swiz], Joe Gorelick [Garden Variety], and Jim Kimball
[J.Majesty]. Together they share a diverse set of influences
[The Damned, Cheap Trick, Queens of the Stone Age, Gary
Numan, The Police, Minor Threat…]
and write songs that keep up the intensity of their previous
bands with an added emphasis on melody and harmony. Their
six-song debut EP, Lean Beat, was released worldwide in the
fall of 2002 through the efforts of Silverthree Sound Recordings
[U.S.], Modern City Records [Europe], and Inherited Alliance
[Japan]. Produced by J. Robbins [Jimmy Eat World, Jets to
Brazil, Burning Airlines], it showcased Retisonic’s
sound and style to rave reviews: NME, Alternative Press,
and Rock Sound each gave 8 out of 10 stars while Kerrang!!!
gave 5 out of 5 K’s, calling Lean
Beat “a classic.”
Following Lean
Beat’s release, Retisonic toured
Europe and criss-crossed the states, including dates with
Nada Surf, Fugazi, and a full U.S. tour as direct support
for Jets to Brazil. College and specialty radio quickly picked
up on the band as stations across the U.S. started spinning
their songs, keeping Lean Beat in the CMJ top 200 for six
weeks. In December, FMQB chose Retisonic as a top 10 Editors’ pick
for 2003 specialty radio. Between tours the band continued
to write, honing songs for their first full-length.
At the
end of 2003, Retisonic headed into the studio with producer
Ian Love [Cardia, Rival Schools] to create Return
To Me.
Retisonic once again joined up with Silverthree to bring
the new CD to the masses, while Modern City released a special
European 12" vinyl version of the album. Kerrang!!!
applauded the band’s “astute lyrical observations
and lurching guitars that make you welcome releases like
this with open arms,” giving the album a 4 out of 5. “More
hooks than a pirate convention,” quipped NME, while
Amplifier claimed Retisonic’s “unbeatable combination
of shimmering pop and shuddering punk makes an irresistible
and potent sonic cocktail.” The folks over at Viva
La Bam [MTV] liked it so much they prominently featured three
songs off the album in multiple episodes. As Return
To Me climbed to a respectable #78 on the CMJ top 200, Retisonic’s
self-directed video for the single “K-16” aired
in video programs across the country alongside such stiff
competition as The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, and Morrisey.
The
subsequent touring in support of their album took Retisonic
across the world again, starting in the U.S. for their SXSW
showcase, followed by dates supporting Coheed & Cambria,
A Static Lullabye, and Vendetta Red. Their second tour of
Europe found Retisonic headlining through Germany, Spain,
France, Italy, and the Netherlands, highlighted by 10 dates
in the United Kingdom. The band capped off 2004 with two
CMJ appearances.
Retisonic spent 2005 writing and recording
their best material to date. Their newest songs showcase
their angular take on punk, rock, melody, harmony, aggression,
beauty, frustration, and love. The Levittown
EP [Ascetic
Records] will give the world a first glimpse of their ever-evolving
efforts. Along with several 16mm film projects in the works,
2006 will prove to be the defining year for Retisonic.
