Persepolis

Yesterday, as a favor to my brother who makes comicbooks, I was dragged along to see the movie Persepolis. I had seen about 1/3 of a 30 second commercial for it the night before, but other than that I was completely in the dark as to what to expect. It was awesome. I give it three snaps in a Z formation.
It's based on the comic and life of Marjane Satrapi, who grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. As she eventually moves to France, the film is in French, but it's subtitled in English, so no worries. The entire film is also animated, but it's definitely not a kid's movie. There's a great balance between historical context and the character development of the quirky, outspoken, punk loving Marjane. It's a refreshing departure from other recent releases, and it's a far far reach from every other comic movie to have come out in the past 10 years. Even though I'll admit to having seen Spiderman 3..twice, that equaled a "yay" in my book.

Planetary never breaks for snow

When your city is covered in at least four inches of slush, at least a thousand pounds of soaked garbage and probably two tons of salt-which destroys your shoes, not snow-I like to imagine being somewhere else.

Like here, in France with Beirut, one of my favorite bands.

from the WTF file....

Someone in Japan had far too much time on their hands and made this ridiculously awesome song using only Windows sound effects.

Things I'm Currently Rocking

As if the world really cares at all what sort of things I'm into, I have decided for blogging purposes to compile a short list of things I am really into at the moment. Enjoy....

1. SweetTart Valentine's Day Hearts
Basically, we all know SweetTarts rule, but their version of candy message hearts rule harder because they are infinitely better than those chalky, disgusting ones that come in that little box. The sayings aren't that great, but they are festive and won't make you want to vomit while eating them like those other ones. I mean, who actually likes those ones anyway?

2. The Acme Heart Maker
Speaking of Valentine's Day themed things, one of my favorite things to do this time of year to show your friends and loved ones you care is making them a customized candy heart at the Acme Heart Maker . I mean, really, where else can you make great custom made hearts like this:

You should totally plaster your friend's myspace pages with creative gems. They will love you for it.

3. Scott Baio is 46 and Pregnant
Readers of the Planetary Blog may remember how excited I was at the conclusion of Scott Baio is 45 and Single to find out the story would be continued into another season. So many questions remain unanswered, such as: Is Scott really ready to be married? A Father? We shall see.

4. Gone Country with John Rich

Now, before you go hating on shows that are a) full of washed up celebrities b) involving country music and c) are somewhat reality based, give this one on CMT a shot. Bobbie Brown and Dee Snider are on it for christ's sake! No, really, its pretty good. Basically, all these singers from different genres, some of them has-beens, learn how to be country stars from John Rich of Big and Rich. We all know how much I LOVE Big and Rich.

5. There Will Be Blood
This movie owns. I wish I could be as seriously cool as Daniel Day Lewis is. Just remember: "I drink your milkshake! I drink it up!" If you don't know what that means, you need to make your way to the cinema and find out.

6. The Boston Red Sox
Baseball season is right around the corner and luckily, hours of waiting paid off as I just received my Red Sox tickets in the mail the other day. I spent five hours online the last time they went on sale getting those buggers, and now I can't wait for the season to begin. Papelbon, I'm coming!

I guess for now that's all I'm really in to, in case you were wondering, which I know you were! ;-)

Holiday trip

It's a little late, but we like to spend the holidays together at good ole Planetary, and the first time we could all get together and exchange Santa gifts was well after the holidays. For me, that means waking up at the asscrack of dawn and hopping a train to the motherland. (Boston)

It's about five in the morning, the sun's coming up, and I'm watching the pollution roll from New York city and fade into the distance. I hate five in the morning.

This is what I stare at for four and a half hours on the train.

Meeting 1.

Meeting 2.

Meeting 3.

The trip literally was less than 24 hours, but NYC was warm and welcoming.

Hey there Planetarians!

I'm Casey and I just started interning with these fine people. I'm a recent transplant to NY, originally from Boston. What's on my ipod you ask? Well I'll tell ya! Against Me's New Wave, and....that's it. I just got it and could only figure out how to put one album on it. Nevertheless, it's a really good album. I'm also really feeling The Avett Bros new album Emotionalism and Deer Tick's self titled. Other fun facts about me: My favorite word is trouser, my favorite fictional band featured in a movie, television show, or mini-series is a tie between The Beets from Doug and Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters from That Thing You Do. My favorite tv shows are The Office, Heroes, and Mythbusters, and my favorite Snapple flavor is Blueberry Iced Tea. That's pretty much me in a nutshell. It's very nice to meet you! :)

I'm going to throw up.
