....and Eugene Has Crabs!

Propagandhi w/ Paint It Black, No Trigger and Pericles
Middle East Downstairs

So Sunday night, all of my high school dreams came true and I finally got to see Propagandhi live, in the flesh. Well, I'm sure that I had other dreams in high school, but I doubt any were as important as this one. I wasn't able to get any pictures, so I asked photographer extraordinaire Dan over at Future Breed if I could borrow some of his, so if you like his pics check out his site!

I didn't make it in time to see the first band, Pericles, and I barely made it in time to see No Trigger, a pretty fun band from Central, MA (Worcester, maybe?) I first learned of this band a little over a year ago when my boyfriend and I first met and he showed me a picture of him in a No Trigger video on his myspace. I only really knew one song of theirs (I think it's called "more to offer" but I also could be entirely wrong) but they played it, so that made me happy.

No Trigger - Reppin' the Central MA!

I had seen Paint It Black and few times and was happy to see them again. Now, most people know I'm by no means an authority on punk rock or hardcore music but I generally enjoy seeing these guys. They have this one song, "Atticus Fitch" that I really like and they closed with that, which was, for me at least, a great way to end the set. I know there are a lot of people out there who aren't necessarily into the "preachy" factor of the band, especially the commentary by lead singer Dan Yemin, but I can't say it really bothered me.

(Dan Yemin, in all his glory. Bonus Question: can you point out which of these audience members rocking out is a planetary employee?)

I'll admit, preachy-ness is not normally something I'm a fan of, but I actually respect this guy, and here's why. First, he was in Lifetime, and Lifetime is pretty rad you gotta admit. Second, the man had a friggen stroke and still managed to stay positive and carry out with his life (and yes, I realize that medically speaking, not all stroke victims can say that and it isn't their fault, I'm just saying it's cool he had a stroke and managed to be fine). Third, he doesn't think just because you're a dude into hardcore you have to be some sort of macho asshole and get into fights. He made mention of this the other night, citing how his hometown of Philly and our homebase of Boston both are notorious for violence within the hardcore scene and that just wasn't necessary (it almost sounded like he was making a dig at those FSU guys, which I can support, as I don't subscribe to their twisted views of morality and justice). Lastly, the man has a doctorate and is a practicing teen/child psychologist. Now, I'm not saying every person with a degree or education is smart or right in their views, but at least he's not some guy in a band who has no education who spouts off his mouth. He's just an educated hardcore guy who spouts off his mouth ;-). Either way, I don't hate him, and neither does the boyfriend, who blushed a little when Dan Yemin touched him on the shoulder. He has a bit of a man crush on this guy, but hey, so does every other hardcore guy I know, and I can't say I really blame them.

Chris Hannah - He's From Canada!

Now that I've ranted on why I don't hate Dan Yemin, on to Propagandhi. After their van broke down and they almost didn't make the show, they finally appeared in all of their Canadian glory. I have to admit, they rocked it pretty hard, even though I wasn't close enough to properly get my face shredded off (I'm small, so I thought it was in my best interest to take a step back on this one). It's hard for me to say what the definitive highlight was because there were so many, so here is my short list of songs I thought were awesome as f.u.c.k.

1) "Dear Coach's Corner" - when they played this one off of Supporting Caste, hands went up in the air and the crowd went crazy
2) "Back To The Motor League" - from Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes, because it's my favorite song of theirs - I used to drive around in my 2door pontiac grand-am to this one
3) "Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasik An" - also from Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes - it really is a great way to start an album and it totally rocked in person.
4) "Haillie Sellasse, Up Your Ass" - from the band's first album How To Clean Everything. It's never been my favorite song, but with the addition of the second guitarist, they really filled this one out and made it totally ballsy and awesome.
5) "Fuck The Border" - also from "Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes." What made this one special was that Dan Yemin did the vocals and I think he did a great job filling in for Todd The Rod, and the audience went ape-shit for it. Here is an awesome picture where it looks like Yemin's neck vein is going to burst.

Holy Neck Vein Batman!

Not only did the band fulfill all of my expectations musically, but they fulfilled all my expectations of them being Canadian. Maybe they play up their Canadianess for us dumb Americans, but if they do, I don't care, I still love it all the same. But then again, I love a lot of things Canadian, like The Kids in the Hall, Degrassi (original and present), Trailer Park Boys, Labatt Blue, Molson, The Urban Peasant and Coronation Street. Maybe I should move to Canada?

Todd, The Rod!

And of course, the guys managed to be humorous, making jokes with each other about farts, hockey and everything in between. Chris Hannah even had the crowd chant "The Sound Man's Name Is Eugene and Eugene Has Crabs" to get the rest of the band out for an encore. Priceless. Where's Dave Foley when you need him?

Thanks again to the Propagandhi dudes for having us out and putting on a show that will be hard to beat this year, I can't think of anything else that will make me this happy!
