SILVER SUN - Dad's Weird Dream

Now that the six-year break between albums is behind them, UK four piece Silver Sun follows up 2005’s Disappear Here with their newest rock de force, Dad's Weird Dream. The 13 songs that were crafted by lead vocalist James Broad follow the same formula used to concoct their UK hit “I’ll See You Around.” The obvious difference between Dream and Here is that, this time around, it’s a family affair. After producing and playing every instrument on Disappear Here, Broad got the rest of the band to back him up. Drummer Richard Sayce is only credited as to supplying backing vocals, but Richard Buckton and Paul Smith respectively return to their bass and guitar duties.

Originally released in their native UK last fall, the album will see its US release July 3rd, just in time to blast it from your car stereos as you drive around with the tops down this summer. Dream features the squelching guitars; spastic keyboards and grand harmonies that Silver Sun are famous for. Rather than sounding like such Britpop luminaries such as Blur, Pulp and the Verve, Silver Sun rock - and do it hard. A song like “Facts Of Life,” what with its contagious chorus and addictive keyboard sounds like any big American hit of the 1980s. A tribal drumbeat on “Fallen” – mixed by old friend and talented producer Nigel Godrich - makes way for sleigh bells and synthesizers before another chorus with those trademark shiny chorus harmonies.

Recorded in Broad’s home in Walthamstow, Silver Sun continue to make no efforts to hide their perverse humor, witty lyricism, and natural knack for melody. Knowing what works best, they’ve crafted a record of refreshed ideas – Dad’s Weird Dream is the sound of friends reuniting in song. “Sunday Gurl” is a brain massage, while “Hi Scorpia” is a pop twist on the basic elements that made punk so addictive. The key for Silver Sun is harmony, and the incredible click of vocal and instrumentation is consistent throughout the entire record.

Also appropriate is the home Silver Sun has established with UK’s Invisible Hands Music. Established in 1987, the label was originally created as an outlet for founder Charles Kennedy to release his own music. Though Kennedy has continued to occasionally perform and record music since the label’s inception (including his current group, The Aries Project), any vacations he takes from playing are understandable; after all, he heads up what has become a fledgling British indie label. A number of varied artists populate IHM’s roster. The diverse group ranges from former Stranglers’ frontman Hugh Cornwell to 70s super group Emerson Lake and Palmer to the multi-influenced singer songwriter Rob Reynolds.

Notes: Famed producer Nigel Godrich (whose first prod ucing gig ever was his work Silver Sun’s self-titled debut in 1997) lends his hands and ears to the knobs again, mixing Dream’s lead off track, “Fallen.”
