LUCKY FONZ III
Life Is Short
Release Date: TBD
The Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter Lucky Fonz III (born Otto Wichers, 1981) is deeply rooted in American song traditions: from Cash and Dylan to Bright Eyes and Will Oldham. After short stints as a pianist, DJ and busker he started performing traditional folk music while living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Back in Amsterdam in 2005 he became a solo performing singer-songwriter on the thriving local underground folk scene. In a relatively short period of time he managed to become a popular live act. His songs have earned him a devoted following among indie fans as well as the roots crowd.
In the spring of 2006 he self-released the critically acclaimed debut album 'Lucky Fonz III'. Its songs were picked up first by alternative radio stations and later by national radio. Throughout the year 2006 he won three prizes for his performances: The Amsterdam pop price “Nice Tunes’ for new talent, The Essent Award and the Grand Prize of The Netherlands for singer-songwriters, the most prestigious prize for new acts. Lucky Fonz III has played several festivals and opened up for, among others, Larkin Grimm, Curtis Eller, Badly Drawn Boy and Jason Molina. In the spring of 2007 he toured Australia supporting The Beautiful Girls and CW Stoneking. Lucky Fonz III’s debut album has been released in Australia through Cruiserweight/MGM.
His second album ('Life is Short') has been released in October 2007. His new songs have a more European feel, incorporating influences such as the French chanson, gypsy song and English balladry. Still the blues, country and folk are never far away.
This album brought Lucky Fonz III to all major venues (sold out tour at 1000+ capacity venues) and premier Dutch festivals. He had his first airplay hit with the song ‘Once I was a Lady’ on Dutch National radio 2, Dutch 3FM and on Australia’s Triple J.
Lucky Fonz III toured in several countries like Denmark, Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg and the UK.
Lucky Fonz III’s aim as an artist is, in own words, 'to make many beautiful songs and albums, to give many beautiful performances, to have many beautiful fans, and to be an artist worthy of existence'
