WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO PROMOTE YOUR MUSIC ONLINE?

So, you’re a musician who wants to share your music with the world. You are confident and convinced that your work is good enough to cause significant impact within the music industry. That’s great! What may dampen your spirit a little is the fact that thousands of other musicians have thought the same thing.

Promoting your music and taking your career to the next level requires dedication, skill, and experience. But how can you achieve this when all you have time for is creating music, working a job, playing shows and just generally living your life?

The following represents some of the best ways to promote your musical content in 2021. If it seems overwhelming, don’t worry. You don’t have to do it alone. Planetary can help fill in the gaps and promote your music in ways you might not have time for.

    CREATE A WEBSITE

Let’s face it—the days of sending your demo tape to record labels and hanging fliers in the streets are over. Now the internet runs the show, and many promotional tools used back in the day have become obsolete…though not all of them!

Social media may be hotter than ever (more on that in a bit), but a website is still a must-have for every musician. Your website can serve as a hub of everything you’ve ever created as well as a resource for anyone who may be interested in you and your work. This is where you can sell merchandise, list all your upcoming concerts, provide all contact info, and include every song, album and video you’ve ever created.

    BE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is perhaps the best option when it comes to captivating your audience. The content found on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can be shared with the world in a matter of seconds, and it spreads like wildfire. These sites provide a tremendous opportunity to engage with the world and let them know about your passion for music, your upcoming shows and releases, as well as who you are as a person. Participating as a musician on social media can help you put a face and a character behind the chords and the singing voice.

When it comes to promoting something new, such as a song or a video, social media must be one of your first thoughts, and you need to spend a lot of time and energy doing it right. Don’t just tweet that your new album is coming soon, create a full plan around each platform and every new piece of content!

We could discuss each site separately in a complete article, but for now, let’s just say that platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok are all hugely important for music promotion in 2021.

Not sure where to get started when it comes to promoting your music? Let Planetary guide you.

    BUILD YOUR OWN PRESS KIT

When promoting your music, you need to pay close attention to the general media. Magazines, newspapers and blogs still reach millions of people, both with their own platforms and on their social channels. The media can open the doors to new audiences and expose them to your music. Before you even think to start a promotional campaign that involves the media, you need to create a press kit, which will have everything writers, bloggers and influencers may need to spread the good word.

As you make your press kit (which can be done manually or with the help of many tools available on the internet), make sure to include photos (with credits), high quality downloads of your music, all images of album and single art, videos, and especially a bio, which tells the story of who you are and how your art came to be.

    NEWSLETTER

Just like websites, some ultra cool members of the music industry will claim that email newsletters are dead and that nobody needs them. This may sound forward-thinking, but it’s wrong.

Many of your most die-hard fans will be willing to sign up for your newsletter, should you have one, and that is how at least some of them will find out about upcoming concerts, new music on the way, or even that new merch items have been added to your store. These are the people who love you more than anyone, and chances are they may miss any announcement you make on social media, so why not give yourself another chance to reach them via email?

You don’t need to dedicate tons of time to a monthly newsletter, but failing to do so is seriously doing your career a disservice.

WHY IS ONLINE MUSIC PROMOTION IMPORTANT?

It is a very competitive and crowded world out there. How can you make sure you have a fighting chance to make it big into the music industry? The answer to this question is two-fold. First, make great music. Second, promote it.

If you don’t take the time and put in the effort to let the world know about your music, chances are you may not be able to reach the audience you deserve. Having a strategic, well-conceived, and well-executed promotion plan can help you bring your music career to the next level.
