Planetary Group took some time to get to know Chayse Porter, whose new record ‘Chay’s Palace’ is out now.
Planetary Group: Tell us about your latest release. How did you come to create it?
Chayse: I think, like most creative pursuits of mine, it begins a little bit aimless; it feels like I’m sort of stumbling down a dark hallway searching for the light switch. And as I continued to write for the album (Chay’s Palace), it started to make a little bit more sense and revealed itself to me.
PG: Share a bit about your musical journey, from when you first started making music until now.
Chayse: I grew up listening to a lot of punk and garage and kind of grungy, weird stuff. So I had this obsession of taking pop structures and just bending them into something strange. I guess I never really grew out of that.
PG: Let’s talk about the music that you love. Pick one album for each category below & tell us a bit about it!
- An album you grew up listening to:
Chayse: I would say the album I’ve been listening to the longest is The Cars’ self-titled record. I just think it’s wall-to-wall perfect – the craftsmanship and production of that record is just amazing. I think if The Cars had started that band today, it would still be way ahead of its time.
- An album that inspires you as an artist (I’m sure there are many, but pick one of your choosing):
Chayse: One of my main influences today is Burt Bacharach, specifically the album Reach Out. I think he’s an incredible composer, and he just transports me to another time and place; I think that’s really hard to do with music, and I think he does an incredible job. The orchestration and arrangement on Reach Out are top tier. I think it’s some of his best work.
- The album you currently have on repeat:
Chayse: Leisure World from Diners. Tyler [Blue Broderick] is just an incredible songwriter and he’s always inspiring me to be more creative with my music.
PG: What do you want people to take away from your music?
Chayse: I don’t know, just have fun. Enjoy the small moments between all the bigger moments.
What’s next up for you?
Chayse: I’m currently writing a new record. I’m about halfway through and when I tie up some things with that, I’ll go into the studio and start recording. I’m hoping to get in the studio by June.
I hope you enjoy the new record Chay’s Palace. Hopefully I can play some music for y’all soon!
